The Western Front-
The battles held on the Western Front took place from the 1914 to the 1918. The involvement of Australian troops into the battles of the Western Front occurred in March 1916. The AIF transferred its soldiers to France, and thus by July, the Australians were greatly involved in the Western Front battles (Department of Veterans’ Affairs and Board of Studies NSW, 2014).
Of the 295,000 Australian soldiers that were recruited or enlisted into the AIF, 46,000 never made it home due to their passing and 132,000 were either wounded or held as prisoners of war. Once located between France and Belgium, trenches found in the Western front spread from end to end as far out as 40234 kilometers. 19312 of these kilometers were occupied by Allies, and the rest by Central Powers (Darlington, 2012). On the19th of July 1916 a small yet bloody conflict between the 5th Division and German forces at Fromelles in Northern France left hundreds injured.
The battle of Somme was fought by the 1st, 2nd and 4th Divisions at Pozières and Mouquet Farm. The AIF suffered from the loss of 23,000 soldiers on the 23rd of July with their attempt of holding and taking the town of Pozières. German artillery had not only slaughtered thousands of men but in the process reduced the town to a deserted wasteland (Commonwealth of Australia, 2014).
